Marie Laveau, Madame LaLaurie, Countess Báthory and the Ten Commandments

Ode to the Mastery of Evil

I am very much a student of history and as such, there are those people I find fascinating and stimulating. I respect “Leaders”; they are the ones with the courage to go it alone and say “Fuck Off” when a particular situation so dictates the necessity. I want to point out some women for their “brand” of culture and societal impact. Some are good and some are bad however, all are recognized for the mastery of their chosen proclivity. Let’s get started…….

1. Marie Laveau First on my list (in no certain order), from my hometown of New Orleans, is Marie Catherine Laveau. Marie Laveau is respected by many practitioners of the magical arts. Known as the Voodoo Queen, her ‘pink’ burial plot (St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, South Quadrant) often serves as site for Voodoo, Hoodoo and other ritualistic acts, including Satanic Black Masses. Marie Catherine Laveau Burial Plot St. Louis Cemetery New Orleans LouisianaMarie was a Creole free person of color, a hairdresser born from her mother’s brief plaçage arrangement and a skillful gris-gris Voodoo practitioner. She would hold ceremonies, dance naked around a bonfire, and sell gris-gris bags. Of her “magical” abilities, she claimed to have saved men from the gallows, healed the sick, and remained forever youthful. She is said to have died in her home, peacefully, in 1881. Trivia: Angela Bassett played Marie Laveau in the FX Network American Horror Story: Coven television series.

2. Marie Delphine LaLaurie Next up is Marie Delphine LaLaurie. Often calledMadame LaLaurie”, she was ahead of her time in more ways than one. She was a socialite, politically connected (her cousin was Mayor of New Orleans), was the wife of a physician, chained her cook to the stove, met the Queen of Spain and was a serial killer in Louisiana’s history. Delphine had a penchant for pain and she was exacting when administering her definition of discipline. She enjoyed the starvation of her slaves, issued slow, excruciatingly painful beatings, slashing / flaying their skin and other brutal mutilations such as chaining the victim up-side-down with weights suspended from the victim’s neck while she administered beatings with horse whips. This type of torture would last until the victim expired; sometimes as long as a week! Her beautiful mansion on Royal Street had been transformed into a stylized ‘little shop of horrors’ as revealed to the public following a fire in 1834 at the home. After the fire, the grizzly acts were revealed and it is believed Delphine fled to Paris however, some skeptics claim she never went further than the north shore; carrying on her vexing methodologies until her quite mundane death……..succumbing to pneumonia although a hunting accident has also been used as her cause of death. It is estimated that the number of slaves who died at the hands of LaLaurie could be as many as one hundred. Trivia: Kathy Bates played Madame LaLaurie in the FX Network American Horror Story: Coven television series.

3. Countess Elizabeth Báthory Elizabeth Báthory (known as the Blood Countess) was one of the most prolific female serial killers in history however, I find hMarie Delphine LaLaurie. Often referred to as "Madame LaLaurie", she was ahead of her time in more ways than one. She was a socialite, politically connected (her cousin was Mayor of New Orleans), was the wife of a physician, chained her cook to the stove, met the Queen of Spain and was a serial killer in Louisiana's interesting because she bathed in the victim’s blood; often bathing in the warm blood while her victim was being bled-out (exsanguination) while dying. Other brutal acts included, biting the victim to draw blood, beating the victim, burning, crushing fingers and hands, freezing, starving and exsanguination. She also forced one victim to cut off, cook and eat her own flesh before beating her and draining her blood into a bathtub……for Báthory’s healthcare regiment bath. After her husband’s death, she and four collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and young women, with one witness attributing to them over 600 victims, though the number for which they were convicted was 80. Elizabeth herself was neither tried nor convicted. In 1611, she was punished for her crimes by bricking her up in rooms of the Csejthe Castle. She died in 1614.

Ten Commandments; Constitution for the United States of Xtianity?

I am often asked my opinion about the ten (10) commandments so I felt inclined to write about the subject. As you may be aware, the commandments we originally chiseled upon stone tablets during an alleged time of unrest as Moses struggled to bring the jewish escapees under control after fleeing Egyptian bondage. As the story goes, during a forty-day stay on Mount Sinai, Moses received the Decalogue (10 Commandments) and instructions which he was to deliver to the jewish people waiting below. The events were recorded in the Pentateuch. {a.k.a. the Five Books of Moses, the first part of the Hebrew Bible [Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy]. In Judaism, it is called the “Torah” and is the first part of the Tanakh. In xtianity, it is known as the first part of the Old Testament}. This is probably more than you wanted to know……………The Bible Is Bullshit and Lies!

So, what better mechanism to control a mob of religiously-inclined extremists? Perhaps the word of god…… writing, no doubt set the stage for the coming Zealotry and Judaean revolt!! Even Maimonides was proud of the mileage gained from “The Big 10”. When challenged on any religious subject, one could simply say “god will not be questioned”…..end of the conversation.

“Those who observe the nature of the Universe and the commandments of the Law, and know their purpose, see clearly God’s mercy and truth in everything; they seek, therefore, that which the Creator intended to be the aim of man, viz., comprehension.”  Guide for the Perplexed (circa 1190) by Moshe (Moses) ben Maimon

So, when “all hell” was breaking loose, Moses decided to take a hike up a mountain. During this 40 day jaunt, god decided the time was right to give a few laws; some moral code to serve as the basis for civilization to frame existence and harmonize coexistence for all people, of all beliefs, everywhere. It just so happened, god felt this urge right when ‘his’ people were growing impatient…….waiting for entry into their ‘promised land’; promised by god however, no one told the inhabitants about god’s plans. Some accounts attempt to excuse the jews by claiming Egyptians were the ones worshipping idols however, a golden calf was built and worshipped. Bull worship was quite common during that time in history. In modern society, Bullshit worship is very common!!

When god Spoke……It Must Have Been Important!?!???!??

So, what important messages were given to his beloved children whom he loved? Let’s take a look at some tidbits that seem more discombobulated than Quentin Tarantino directing a Passion Play.

1. “I am the lord your god, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.”

Ok, if you feel the need to tell everyone you are god………….. Is this the most important information to be communicated at this juncture? My opinion: “Epic Fail!”

2. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the lord your god, am a jealous god, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.”

It is going to be difficult to get an ego this size into any temple………perhaps that is why jewish temples and xtian churches are so damn large!! Another opportunity to share the secrets of life and Religion Is Lies In Any Languageperhaps the cure for cancer however, god takes a few more minutes to stroke the ole’ ego again. More stroking continues in #3.

3. “You shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”

Alright, there is a common theme emerging here, goddamn it!

4. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the lord your god.”

More “worship me” conditional language. Where could he be worshipped better than at a temple, church, etc. Bring your money and drop it off.

5. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the lord your god is giving you.”

Well, this was out of ‘left field’. Not the most usable information………….probably aimed at more control and worship.

6. “You shall not murder.”

Now this seems appropriate although, it is very vague. Do animals count or just humans? How will I get my golden calf to stay on the bun if I don’t kill it? This must not apply to the animal sacrifices…… know, when innocent animals are murdered in god’s name????? Too fucking confusing…….. now I want a hamburger!

7. “You shall not commit adultery.”

So, is this really the most important in the running order? What about rape? Is rape ok as long as adultery is not committed? What about pedophilia? Well, I guess that would limit the job perks when recruiting for the church………..“$hit Fire, WTF?”

8. “You shall not steal.”

So, feel free to rape, beat ’em half-to-death, but do not take the jewelry. This sounds like a bad “Dean Martin Roast” gone terribly wrong!!!

9. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

?????????? Really???????? Really???????? Pretty lame!

10. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Now, is this the big finale? Do not covet your neighbor’s donkey? Really? No cure for cancer, end to hunger or “useable” information?Sanctum of Shadows Volume II Corpus Satanas

A few years ago, George Carlin revealed his belief in his usual (and funny) manner. Here is his “take” on the ten commandments.

“About five thousand years ago, a bunch of religious and political hustlers got together to figure out how they could control people and keep them in line. They knew people were basically stupid and would believe anything they were told, so these guys announced that God— God personally—had given one of them a list of Ten Commandments that he wanted everyone to follow. They claimed the whole thing took place on a mountaintop, when no one else was around.”

So, what do you think?

Until next time,

Aleister Nacht

In between takes on American Horror Story: Coven

MakeUp FX for Coven are designed and created at

These art direction/production design though.

I am not impressed. I am wondering why the witches have a splendid living space and this rundown old place is where Marie would be living.

Am I the only one who clocked the Olokun tool in the left hand corner? Hmph and u call urselves brujos

You’re always trying to out Brujo someone. I think appreciating the image without calling every tool out is totally fine.

Back on topic, my interpretation of the wealth of the Witches and the APPARENT poverty of the Voodoo people goes along with the fact the Witches are all at each other’s throats so the splendor and glory of their manor is empty and cancerous (literally) while what appears to be poverty and shit being run down is counteracted by the closeness of the practice to their lives of the Voodoo group (instead of the suppression and internalization of magic of the witches) and also the fact their group is very much alive and kicking.

They also say it’s a straight up about racial inequality too?? I mean, the Robichaux house is in Uptown on Prytania St. and that is a very, very upscale (read: white) area. I mean, the houses around there are all mansions and host opera recitals and chamber groups on the regular. It’s straight up old money southern aristocracy culture.

Marie’s solon is in the upper nineth, somewhere around St. Roch (maybe St. Claude) I think, but we don’t really get many good shots of the outside of it. That area is sadly getting gentrified to hell and back right now, but it’s still mainly poor and black. Also, it’s not far from the part of the French Quarter where Marie LeVeau actually opperated and is still of Voodoo today. The thing I worry about watching this show is that people will forget that Marie LeVeau and sadly Delphine LaLaurie but my issues with that are another post were REAL PEOPLEreal peoplereal people. Laveau is so important to so many groups in New Orleans.

Also, Voodoo is still very much alive here and it isn’t practiced in uptown. It’s practiced in midcity and parts of the westbank—areas that are primarily black and primarily poor.

Laveau was also never actually wealthy. In real life, she worked as a hairdresser. Only to wealthy white women. At least on Coven she gets to do things on her own terms.

There is so, so much this show gets wrong about my city, but one thing it does get right is the racial divide and that it equals a socio-economic divide as well.
