Satanism: The Xanist’s ‘Persona Non Grata’ – Satan

Church of Satan

“As you can see, there are no elements of Devil worship in the Church of Satan.”

“Such practices are looked upon as being Christian heresies; believing in the dualistic Christian world view of “God vs. the Devil” and choosing to side with the Prince of Darkness.”

“Satanists do not believe in the supernatural, in neither God nor the Devil.”

“To the Satanist, he is his own God. Satan is a symbol of Man living as his prideful, carnal nature dictates. The reality behind Satan is simply the dark evolutionary force of entropy that permeates all of nature and provides the drive for survival and propagation inherent in all living things. Satan is not a conscious entity to be worshipped, rather a reservoir of power inside each human to be tapped at will. Thus any concept of sacrifice is rejected as a Christian aberration—in Satanism there’s no deity to which one can sacrifice. Satanists do have experience of the super-normal in their practice of ritual or Greater Magic. This is a technique for influencing the outcome of human events to desired ends via reaching an extreme emotional state in the context of a ritual, sending forth a vision of what you want to occur (the Is To Be), which, if your levels of adrenaline are high enough, will permeate the unconscious minds of those you wish to influence, causing them to behave as you Will when the time is right. This does not mean that anything is possible, for it takes a great deal of energy to make a strong sending, and it is often difficult to influence events from the inertia of their present directions. Awareness of your abilities and what is possible to achieve is the hallmark of a successful Satanic magician. The theory and practice for Greater Magic is to be found in The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals. Satanists also practice Lesser Magic which is basically the day-to-day manipulation of your fellows to obtain your ends. Detailed techniques are given in The Satanic Witch.”

 Magus Peter H. Gilmore  – Ref. Source: Satanism: The Feared Religion

A few years ago I was conducting research for a small newsletter article. The title of my article was “The Xanist’s ‘Persona Non Grata’ – Satan” and the theme was to contrast polar opposites within the stratified theologies of Satanism. Ok, that sounds more like a PhD topic; let me break it down…………….

In my usual “I don’t care what anyone thinks……” approach to writing, I dove head-first into my usual ‘veloce’ linguistic cadenceAs with most good things, I was rambling on and on, trying to make a point about how some people adopt the name ‘Satan’ to have a figurehead to shout “Hail” to while people gang fuck each other. From this article (that has faded into history), I first used the sobriquet “Xanist” to describe those avaricious, furtive drifters who latched onto the royal title of “Satanist”.Black Goat

After reading the article, the editor never invited me to contribute ever again. Though I had offers from time to time, that was the last article I wrote for any periodicals or other publications. Some might say it was a missed opportunity on my part however, those who know me would say “he refuses to be all things to all people”.

While we live in a gray, opaque, modern realm where tact and opinion coexist on a razor’s edge, it is almost unpardonable to be brutally honest about an opinion. Political Correctness aside, everyone must remain painfully aware they may marginalize or otherwise offend someone with the slightest word. It is not my intention to offend anyone with this blog post however, I will express my unbridled thoughts on the matter of “Satanism without Satan”. If you are a card-carrying member of the Church of Satan, you may be offended. I will use the article excerpt above, written by Magus Peter Gilmore of the Church of Satan. Let’s begin.

1. “Satanists do not believe in the supernatural, in neither God nor the Devil. Such practices are looked upon as being Christian heresies; believing in the dualistic Christian world view of “God vs. the Devil” and choosing to side with the Prince of Darkness.” Magus Peter Gilmore

I adamantly disagree with this statement. This leads many searchers into confusion from the beginning of their journey to enlightenment. “The “High Priest” in the Church of Satan, including all other Satanists, do not believe in the existence of Satan?” WTF? I believe Mr. Gilmore would be more accurate stating “The Church of Satan does not recognize Satan as an anthropomorphic being, specter nor corporeal extant”.

2. “Satan is not a conscious entity to be worshipped, rather a reservoir of power inside each human to be tapped at will.” Magus Peter Gilmore

So again, Mr. Gilmore denies the existence of Satan by substituting a reservoir of human power. Even the thought of the “nonexistent” Satan is not worthy of worship from a ………. Satanist? So, what about all the shouting “Hail Satan” in this video? Who the Hell are they Hailing…..”?

3. “The reality behind Satan is simply the dark evolutionary force of entropy that permeates all of nature and provides the drive for survival and propagation inherent in all living things.” Magus Peter Gilmore

In this statement, Mr. Gilmore professes Satan (who, according to the Church of Satan, does not exist) is actually the natural evolution on earth, the fight for survival and primal urge to repopulate with offspring, proliferating the bloodline while replenishing / revitalizing the gene pool. I wonder if Charles Darwin was a Satanist? What Mr. Gilmore is describing sounds like Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”.

 4. “Satanists do have experience of the super-normal in their practice of ritual or Greater Magic. This is a technique for influencing the outcome of human events to desired ends via reaching an extreme emotional state in the context of a ritual, sending forth a vision of what you want to occur (the Is To Be), which, if your levels of adrenaline are high enough, will permeate the unconscious minds of those you wish to influence, causing them to behave as you Will when the time is right.” Magus Peter Gilmore

Mr. Gilmore demoted Greater Magic to a level of ‘wishing really hard for something with high levels of adrenaline’. So, it appears that the Church of Satan does not believe in magical operations, which makes me wonder; “What are they trying to accomplish during rituals?” Perhaps their time would be better spent writing letters to Santa Claus, wishing really hard to win the lottery and getting that adrenaline elevated by jogging in the middle of LA’s 405 Freeway.

5. “Satanists also practice Lesser Magic which is basically the day-to-day manipulation of your fellows to obtain your ends.”  Magus Peter Gilmore

Ok, so Lesser Magic is defined as ‘mind games or slight of hand’? Well, I guess my expectations were pretty low considering Greater Magic was……..well, not so great.

So, we examined a few sentences from the High Priest of the Church of Satan and discovered:

1. The Church of Satan does not believe in Satan and if they did, they would not worship the “Prince of Darkness”;

2.  The Church of Satan does not believe in a god or the Devil;

3. The Church of Satan calls Natural Evolution and Darwinism “Satan”;

4. The Church of Satan believes Greater Magic is ‘not so great’, since it is centered around the adrenal glands and a Lotto ticket;

5. The Church of Satan believes Lesser Magic (shell game, card trick, Got Your Nose, etc.) is “lesser than Greater Magic while being greater than no magic yet never greater that Greater Magic without changing from Lessor Magic to Greater Magic,…………?!$*#”.

If a christian did not believe in the christ, he / she would be called an atheist. So, why is a Satanist that does not believe in Satan called a ………Satanist?

Greater MagicI wonder, if you bought a lottery ticket, got jacked up on Mountain Dew while skydiving……………………… never-mind!

  5. I’m a bit torn on this issue because I think there is a strong psychological element at work in the drama of ritual and magic that we use; and I wouldn’t want to underplay the power and importance of the individual will in Satanic philosophy. However, on the whole I very much agree with you. In my own workings I feel a deep personal connection both to Hathor and to Satan. They certainly “feel” like real entities to me and it would seem disrespectful (and foolish!) not to acknowledge them as such. I also don’t really understand why Satanists who don’t believe in Satan would want to refer to themselves as such. That seems disrespectful too. (Although perversely I do see how it might fit in with their overall philosophy). Well, I’m rambling now! Dark Blessings, Cassie
